Switch History

The front panel switches have been the most difficult component to source. C&K, the original manufacturer, as well as many others have discontinued the J4-style paddle switches. Many years ago, NKK introduced a beefed-up version of the C&K with the J4 paddles. These switches are still available but have two drawbacks. They’re very expensive, and the blue color is not a good match to the C&K blue. Another clone of the C&K were introduced by Alcoswitch and E-switch. You can sometimes find these on the surplus market and eBay. While the paddles are an excellent match for the C&K, they are subtly different and are not interchangeable with the C&K paddles.

We found a reputable switch manufacturer who cloned the Alcoswitch. These are the switches we use in IMSAI front panel kits. We think they're actually better than the C&K:

  • They're easier to operate.
  • The color match is good. The blue is spot-on, and the red is richer and less orange.
  • We use gold-plated contacts in all but the power rocker. IMSAI originally used silver contact C&K switches, which were never meant for low voltage applications.

Because these new switches are not an exact match to the C&K, we do not recommend mixing these in with other switches − even the original C&K. If you must replace a switch or two in an existing system, the best option is to replace all of them with new ones.
